First...Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. First, I am SO sorry to hear about the gun at your school. It sends shivers up my spine! Second, I couldn't agree more about the importance of acknowledging the attraction of guns to kids. We have to be honest about the complexity of the issue before we can address it. I love the words you used: power and intrigue. I also love your suggestion about asking them what they think first. It's very wise.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06644197778332602406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3411498686366661202.post-75625760926315312152012-12-30T21:13:38.935-08:002012-12-30T21:13:38.935-08:00our kids want to talk about this ALOT! we live i...our kids want to talk about this ALOT! we live in hunting country, so even though we do not have guns in our house most of my kids friends do....momto8https://www.blogger.com/profile/13964950285763339907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3411498686366661202.post-61870750179190035162012-12-30T20:32:46.169-08:002012-12-30T20:32:46.169-08:00I took on this conversation with my 12-year-old, b...I took on this conversation with my 12-year-old, because one day after the Newtown shooting, a sixth grader in our district brought a loaded gun to school and was showing it off to his friends in the bathroom. I think children (maybe mostly boys) are compelled by the power and intrigue of a gun. Of course, there's the obvious things I told, much like what your parents taught you. I also had to tell him to report someone if anyone at his school ever had a gun. We are in a city environment, too, but we are also not far from the country so we're stuck in the middle of both worlds. I think the best way to start the conversation is to ask what they think about guns. Then, you can start to teach the all the 'do nots' that come with them. It is a very important dialogue to have to with your child. Denisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07037821915770816003noreply@blogger.com
