What's a Kookaburra?

When George and I were dating, we spent a lot of time contemplating the meaningful topics of life. But "To Be or Not to Be?" has become a pre-baby question. These days, even the adult conversations begin with a juvenile concern:

Where did Donald Duck leave his pants?

Who's in the kitchen with Dinah?

How do you spell paw-paw?

What did the monkey do to the weasel to make him that mad?

Is Goofy a dog?

Would you rather eat green eggs and ham with a mouse or a goat?

Who exactly were Davie Crockett, John Henry and Paul Bunyon?

Why doesn't Cookie Monster have a nose?

What's the recipe for blackbirds baked in a pie?

Does Mickey Mouse wear gloves as a formality or is he always cold?

How did Raffi become our children's answer to The Beatles?

You'd be surprised how long George and I can milk one of these topics for entertainment. Of course, some of these questions are completely unanswerable, particularly the last one about Raffi's confounding popularity. I did, however, google "Kookaburra" when George asked, "What the hell is a Kookaburra?" For the record, a Kookaburra is a bird from Australia. A fact to be filed under the category of "useless trivia".

We decided she's rather cute, though. We hear she's always up for a good laugh too.

  3. There's even a song: Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. Merry merry king of the brush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra, Laugh, Kookaburra. Live a life that's free!
And now for the never-ending child's questions? You. Are. Ready.

  4. I have a four-year-old who always wants to know how things work (and if he could use a screwdriver better, he would take said things apart to find out). He also knows that Google will answer anything Mom doesn't know. :) Also, the Kookaburra is adorable. There are a couple at a zoo near me.

    1. It's just so weird! We decided that it's because his butt feathers wouldn't fit in pants. Is that what you and your husband decided too?

  6. I love it! And why DOES Mickey Mouse always wear gloves? I was going to tell you about the Kookaburra song but see that Diane already did. Life's great mysteries. My husband and I also like the word-play questions, like "why do you park your car in a driveway and drive on a parkway?" Yeah, we're loads of fun.

  7. I know, I am also still stuck on Mickey's gloves. I think I may have asked myself that questions before. I've actually seen a Kookaburra at the Toronto Zoo! I've never heard of them before and, yes, they're very very cute.

    1. It's funny how we just take things for what they are as children and don't worry what they mean. I did that a lot as a child. I am on twitter. I'm following you, actually!

  10. Who knew!? This bird reminds me of our local fair, each year they hold an ugly dog contest. People flock from miles! Ugly is the new beautiful!

  11. They have a kookaburra at our zoo! It's in the Australia house with the wombats. Which for the record are not bats, don't have wings and are the size of adult pigs. My niece calls them swampbats. They are definitely not those either.

  12. We used to feed kookaburras by hand with mince on my Grandma's back verandah. I remember they were alway more polite about it than the magpies.

  14. Ah, the old kookaburra... I remember that song from my own childhood. I am an early childhood music teacher, and every once in awhile I do a Raffi song with the kids, but I never, I repeat NEVER listen to Raffi in my own home or car. I have fallen far enough, that is for sure.

  16. We have been pondering why story book vehicles need doors when they exist in a world inhabited only by other vehicles. Yesterday my son and I went onto Kid Rex to search the difference between avalanches, mudslides, and tsunamis. It gets more grounded in reality after a while. Oh, god, but then there will be high school and it will be "To be or not to be" all over again.
