The Exorcist Meets Munchausen

Claire crawled into my lap, curled herself into my chest and fell asleep. I wriggled my body into a prone position on the couch, pulled a blanket over us, and we took a nap together.

She hasn't rested on my chest like that in a long time. I miss it. She's growing up.

Lately, when she comes up onto my lap, she has a demand. "Read book!" or "Row, row your boat!", she implores, like a little tyrant. I try to kiss her, and she'll make her body rigid and arch against me. Then she yells "DOWN!", and is off me and onto the next toddler task on her agenda.

Yes, our nap together was delicious. Is there something wrong with me?

It's just that Claire was recovering from a bout of late night vomiting. The kind that reminds a parent of The Exorcist. Her impulse to climb in my lap was because she wasn't feeling well. I'm guilty of benefiting from my daughter's misfortune.

I fear I'm relishing in her convalescence too much. I like the extra cuddles and closeness. I like being needed by Claire. I like that she's moving at a slower pace. Hell, I like getting a bit of sleep after the night's hysterics.

I know moms are designed to nurture, but it's a little creepy to feel good when my daughter feels so bad. I'm surely a long way from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, but it did cross my mind...

  1. I felt the same way when mine were little-especially the boys because they were so cuddly when they didn't feel well. I didn't want them to be sick....but I sure did appreciate the extra hugs!
And that pic of Linda Blair is a hell of a lot creepier than my zombie pictures! LOL!

  2. I don't see anything wrong with it. My son is autistic and in his rare moments when he wants to cuddle, it's heaven on earth because most of the time he doesn't want us to touch him in any form.

Cherish the moments you get those precious hugs and kisses! :)

  3. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to cuddle. I still love when my girls want to do this and they are 2 and 3 years old. Following over from the Raising Imperfections Link-up!!

  4. LOL. Okay, I think you are a far way from munchausen by proxy. LOL. I understand what you are saying though with the cuddles.

  5. My kids stopped crawling on my lap a long time ago. In fact, it would be way weird if they did. However, I now have a snuggly, little dog who loves to take naps with me. She's the little fur ball on my logo.

  8. hahaha thats hilarious, I'm so guilty of this myself. My son, now three, never snuggles up and falls asleep with me unless he is ill and i do so love it when he does. But yeah I totally get that odd sense of "hmm is it wrong that I'm a little bit pleased he has a fever". I'm pinning this to the Sunday Parenting Party pinboard, thanks for sharing
