I haven't stopped loving numbers one through 10. I traded them for a child, who I love more than all of the things that I used to love combined.

  1. AWWW!!! I love the ending! And I love the things you used to love and still love - so much. (and wait. do moms take long hot showers? is that real?? and do they really clean? because I call a "bs to moms that really clean, like for real).
Ah, sigh to the perky boobs. Youth had no idea, did it?

    1. My mom used to clean! Yes, to youth. Some of these things I SO took for granted when I had them, e.g. the perky boobs!

    1. Janine, I am having so much fun doing these! I can't tell you how much! I love seeing the different ways that people interpret them!

  3. Rachel ~ so many of these are on my list, and as my kids are now 4 and 7, I manage to find time for many of these things to reenter my life (though I think the perky boobs are gone forever, sadly.) And it's fun now that we can go to movies with them (though a different genre than my pre-baby movie going days). I think your list is probably a universal in terms of the things that we miss in the early years, and then somehow, our loves change, or we manage to fit those loves back into our lives (which is what I wrote about for today!)

    1. Well, thanks for the heads-up that some things get better, Sarah!

  4. Beautifully and perfectly said, Rachel. And in addition to your number one, I'd like to add: Long, hot showers... in which I didn't worry that there was a child dying on the other side of the bathroom door. Like, seriously, how do I always convince myself in the middle of my shower (i.e. the 2 minute mark) that Liam has somehow managed to choke on something or has fallen and cracked his head open?! Ah, I miss those very long, hot, worry free showers. :)

    1. I won't even do that, because I'm too paranoid. This may go in the category of TMI, but my husband went on a business trip for four days, and I didn't shower because I was too freaked out about it. And, yes, my daughter does sleep! Why I couldn't do it then is beyond me. Just part of a larger neurosis! :)

    2. Not TMI at all, Rachel! I used to try and shower when Liam would sleep, but I swear the kid has an internal radar that alerts and wakes him the second I step into the shower. I've walked out of a blissful shower, only to hear him screaming from his room way too many times. I gave up!

  6. I can't say anymore than this is soooo true from start to finish. What's a shower and what are perky boobs?

  7. Is it wrong that I felt myself choking back a sob while reading that? We had a particularly rough night at our house, and I am longing for all of the above. Except the wine, because I'm drinking it right. now. But, not at a restaurant. At home alone- in my pajamas. Close enough? SO happy to see you back here again. :)

    1. Oh, I am profoundly aware of wine, Stephanie. Wine has not left my life either. Wine is medicine.

  10. Rachel, this is the best post on FTSF! I love it! The list is so true and yet your conclusion is awesome. It's a paradox, being a parent. You lose your freedom, but you gain a big love. Have a great week! Oh, and link, if you like, on Make My Saturday Sweet.

  11. I remember all those things. It is so exactly true, the paradox of parenting. You sacrifice your short-term, momentary pleasures for long-term love and connection. It's definitely worth it, but I think it's good to acknowledge and grieve for your old life too.

  12. This is perfect!! I love that you took such a simple approach an gave it such a profound ending!

  19. How we used to take these things for granted. Little did we know we'd be dying for a hot shower! And oh, the perky boobs - they're history!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Exactly. In 18 or so years when they head off to college, we will get to discover all those things again as if for the first time.

  21. I love the way you closed. Totally relating...except my boobs are still perky (not).
