Dueling Drama Queens

Source
Tantrums are reaching a fever pitch in this house. The toddler is not the only offending party. She and her mom (that would be me) take turns dawning the drama-queen crown. Wait, let me explain. I have an excuse for my bad behavior.

(My daughter does too. She's a toddler. Her excuse is better.)

I've been sick the last few days. And not just with a garden-variety cold. This bug was flu-like. I swear even my eyelashes hurt. Light and sound aggravated the pain. You can probably guess which of these two triggers my daughter exacerbated. Her cries, yells and demands were like daggers to my head.

I needed relief. It was not coming quickly enough.

At this point, a part of my reptilian brain decides that yelling "Stop! I just can't take it anymore" (and things of a similar ilk, sometimes laced with profanity) is a good idea. Momentarily, I actually feel better. But amping up the temperature of the situation is not a great long-term strategy. It doesn't work for me or my daughter. In the end, I don't know who ends up feeling worse. Probably me since I'm the one who is supposed to be the adult (or at least act like one a good deal of the time).

I don't have much else to say, other than to qualify the confession above by saying that I don't behave this way with the regularity that it occurred during my recent convalescence. Really, I was just wondering what the rest of you do when there's no relief in sight, when you have had it, when you don't have any more resources at your disposal and you can no longer rise above yourself.

And, please, don't tell me to walk away and take a break. My daughter just follows me. And cries louder (my eyelashes start hurting again just thinking about it).

  2. I want to not laugh at this post but inside I'm chuckling as I read this because I know exactly how you feel. Reagan does the same thing ... she follows me and there is nothing I can do.
Rey is starting to understand emotions more and I explain to her mommy doesn't feel well and you are making me sad by acting this way.
Usually that will get her to calm a bit. They I suggest she picks out a movie so we can both watch it together and she'll pick her new fave of the week and I get some quiet.

    1. You know, I've been trying NOT to start the video thing, because I don't want to open that floodgate. But, Lanaya, I really think that I need to cut myself some slack and do what you are suggesting. I think it would be better for us both!

  4. Being so sick your eyelashes hurt is not a happy thing.

As for the relief, I don't get any... sick or not, I'm the go-to to take care of things. That's just the way it is. It can escalate to the point of feeling my blood pressure boiling if I'm really sick, but I've learned it's not going to help anything (at my place anyway). That being said I don't have a drop of good advice to give you, but I'll happily take some from you if it's thrown my way. :)

    Feel better soon!

    1. I do think that that's good advice...just surrendering to the fact that yelling about it isn't going to help.

  5. oooh feel for you and pray you are doing much better.
I try to pamper when I am that poorly since I really try to let others feel better and then I would feel better. I believe that treating others how you would like to be treated helps. I see it coming from my daughter. Love

  6. Ugh. I hate being sick. I am also sick at the moment, but I don't have a toddler to take care of. Whenever I am feeling super stressed out and want to scream, I take a series of deep breaths and imagine blowing out all the negative energy with each exhale.

I realize your daughter screaming isnt negative energy, but it's something that bothers you and must be dealt with.

That technique works miracles for me. Either that, or take a ton of Tylenol PM. That also works. ;-)

  7. It's terrible if you don't have someone who can spell you in a situation like this. I feel sorry for single parents.

  8. I hope you feel better soon. My husband and I both had the flu about 1 1/2 yr ago and IT SUCKED. With no family in town to relieve us, we took turns sleeping and pooping. Not fun. The best news is that you will get better. And at least Claire ins't barfing on your ouchie eyelashes. So there's that.

  9. Thankfully, I haven't been sick like that often. I do get migraines off and on though. Hm, I wonder why? Usually I can nip them in the bud or at least make them manageable. The times that I cannot? Disney channel and the world of princesses my friend. I KNOW they are not supposed to watch too much TV. But when even the hair on my unshaven legs hurt, they can watch it for 24 hours if need be. Hope you feel better soon!

    1. Yes, someone else suggested that. I'm going to just bite the bullet and let the TV rip next time I'm sick!

  10. The week before Christmas all 3 kids and I had the flu. It was like waves, starting with one and then another wave every day or two until we were all sick. It was terrible. I found that instead of trying desperately to get them to give me a break, it was better if I actually cuddled close with them. Watch a video (I napped) or read a story. 5 Minutes of serious attention from mom can prompt an hour of self-directed play. Worth it. I learned this through trial and error (and a little swearing and acting like a toddler myself ;)
    Hope you're feeling much better!

    1. I don't seem to get much "self-directed" play yet. We're working on it, though!

  11. It does seem like life is just one thing after another. I'm telling myself to look at problems as challenges to puzzle out an answer for. I'll let you know how that works...LOL. Life is hard sometimes and it always helps me to hear someone say that. To acknowledge that it is hard and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it. Just someone KNOWING that it's hard for you helps. Debbie @ ilovemylemonadelife.com

  12. I know this all too well! Toddlers and Teens share lots of similarities and tantrums are one. Hang in there...and have some chocolate.

Tantrums are never fun. My daughter is full of drama so she keeps me on my feet.

  15. hope you are feeling better now. I lose it and tell the kids to 'shut up' but then they end up telling each other that so i have to tell them that mummy didn't mean to say that and that it is not a good thing to say! xxx

  16. Hi Rachel!! Children are very sensitive. When you're sick and not feeling well and express that to them, their little hearts soften and the tables are turned...making them want to help you instead! As far as temper tantrums were concerned...all three of our kids had ONE and only one! :-)) Hope you're feeling better Rachel...may you have a lovely evening!

  18. Awww... I'm sorry you're sick. I have been there-deathly ill will a toddler and it is not fun! I hope now that it is a few days later that you are feeling more human.

  19. Sorry you've been ill. Plenty of dvds, chocolate and cuddles. Hope you are fully recovered soon.

  20. I very often lose it, however when I'm ill my kids just seem to know they can't push it, and leave me alone. GG even makes Bug his breakfast these days if Mummy doesn't look like she's getting up!
